Porto Flavia is located near Nebida, in the district of Masua, in the territory of Iglesias. Its loading terminal, like something emerged from a fairytale, is carved out of the rock and suspended over the sea, and it is just the most visible part of a maze of underground tunnels. The structure was used as a boarding system for transporting heavy minerals directly from the mine to the vessels. It was named after Flavia Vecelli, the daughter of Cesare Vecelli, who engineered and designed the harbor. Built in 1923/24, it was the mineral production hub of the west coast of the Sardinian Iglesiente area. The harbor’s characteristics make it unique in the world, and at the time of its construction it was an outstanding and futuristic architectural work.
